After departing the Phoenix metro area, our tour travels through the expansive Sonoran Desert filled with the native saguaro cactus. The scenery begins to change as we increase in elevation and views of the cactus fade into pine trees. As we continue further into Northern Arizona, we will travel the outskirts of the Route 66 town of Flagstaff and from the highway, see the San Francisco Peaks among the seemingly endless Ponderosa Pine Forest, the largest contiguous forest of ponderosa pines in the world.

Williams will be our first stop along the tour for a chance to experience Route 66, the iconic American highway steeped in rich tradition. While in Williams, guests will have the opportunity to “get their kicks on Route 66” with walks along the original route, explore the local shops and capture souvenir photos highlighting a bygone era in classic American history. Also known as the Will Rodgers Highway, Route 66 is the most recognizable road in the United States and stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago to California upon completion.

I booked this trip with Detours Arizona and must say this is a trip you have to take if you're in the Phoenix metro área. John, our tour guide, made the day a very interesting and insigthful one. John demonstrated to be a very knowledgeable guide that made this trip a very special. Highly recommended!

As promised, our confirmation call came around 5pm the preceeding night and driver, Dan, met us promptly at 6:30 the next morning. Dan was friendly, courteous and knowledgeable about the Sonora Desert region of Phoenix and surrounding areas, leading to the Grand Canyon. He informed us about how the Saguaro and prickly pear cacti, the chamomile plants and juniper bushes lining the prairies eventually make way for the tall Ponderosa pines as the altitude changes. When we arrived at the Grand Canyon, Dan informed us about the Native peoples who still live there and about how the Canyon was formed. We so-enjoyed our day at Grand Canyon that we booked a DETOURS tour to Sedona two days later and were pleasantly surprised to have Dan as our driver again! We would recommend DETOURS to anyone considering a stress-free day trip!
