The scenery begins to change as we increase in elevation and views of the cactus fade into pine trees. As we continue further into Northern Arizona, we will travel the outskirts of the Route 66 town of Flagstaff and from the highway, see the San Francisco Peaks among the seemingly endless Ponderosa Pine Forest, the largest contiguous forest of ponderosa pines in the world.

Williams will be our first stop along the tour for a chance to experience Route 66, the iconic American highway steeped in rich tradition. While in Williams, guests will have the opportunity to “get their kicks on Route 66” with walks along the original route, explore the local shops and capture souvenir photos highlighting a bygone era in classic American history. Also known as the Will Rodgers Highway, Route 66 is the most recognizable road in the United States and stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago to California upon completion.

My partner and I booked this with excitement to see the Grand Canyon. Having already driven many hours from CA to AZ, it was a relief to sit back and have someone else drive us. We had no idea that we would get such a great tour guide. Joe was our main man as he navigated the roads to the Grand Canyon, hauling 13 of us (one of them being a small toddler in a car seat). Joe was unbelievably informative, sharing insight of landmarks, history, and his personal experiences of being a native Arizonian. One can tell that he really enjoys what he does, he loves nature, and has a passion for sharing that with others. Joe was very patient and really tried to make sure everyone was comfortable. We did come across some traffic due to an accident but Joe was able to use his knowledge of the area to bypass and save a few minutes. He is not your average Joe! I thoroughly enjoyed my trip with Joe and Detours and would book another visit. Thanks Joe!!

This was my second Detours tour because my first experience a couple of years ago going solo with guide Dan was so fabulous I wanted to share the experience with my other half for his bucket list adventure trip to see the canyon. Our guide, Marc, took us through Williams and then to the South Rim. His upbeat and happy nature peppered with "Dad jokes" was just such fun. He was informative in all aspects - history, geography, demographics, as well as wildlife and botany. We were blessed to see a gang of elk right in front of us, foraging on the edge of the canyon, and mule deer. I hope to do more tours with Detours - have done Sedona as well. My favorite small group tour in AZ.

Overall this was a great experienxe. The guide was bedy knowledgeable and super nice. The bus wasnt super comfy. The lunch was good and the Canyon views were amaZing. Long day overall but worth it!
