The scenery begins to change as we increase in elevation and views of the cactus fade into pine trees. As we continue further into Northern Arizona, we will travel the outskirts of the Route 66 town of Flagstaff and from the highway, see the San Francisco Peaks among the seemingly endless Ponderosa Pine Forest, the largest contiguous forest of ponderosa pines in the world.

Williams will be our first stop along the tour for a chance to experience Route 66, the iconic American highway steeped in rich tradition. While in Williams, guests will have the opportunity to “get their kicks on Route 66” with walks along the original route, explore the local shops and capture souvenir photos highlighting a bygone era in classic American history. Also known as the Will Rodgers Highway, Route 66 is the most recognizable road in the United States and stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago to California upon completion.

My son, his girlfriend and I had the pleasure of having Memo as our driver/guide. The 3.5 - 4 hr ride from Phoenix wasn't that bad as Memo was very friendly and knowledgeable and was great at pointing out things to us along the way. The Grand Canyon is breathtaking. We made 3 stops while there. We may have had a little over an hour and a half at the first stop and maybe 45 min at each of the other 2. Lunch was your choice of 3 different sandwiches or 2 salads. Included was a piece of fruit, chips and some cookies. Memo had plenty of water and made potty breaks as necessary. If you don't plan on hiking the canyon this tour is an excellent alternative. You will see beautiful vistas , get picked up & dropped off and you don't have to drive! I would choose Detours of Arizona again if I find myself there.

The van ride to the Grand Canyon (GC) was comfortable and relaxing. I was excited to have someone else drive for a change! Don picked us up right on time and dropped us off about 11 hours later right in front of our vehicle. Plenty of water was available and a nice box lunch (your choice of turkey, ham, roast beef, salad, fruit, chips & cookies) We made a short stop in Williams,AZ (Route 66) enroute to the Grand Canyon. I wish there were a designated pick-up spot for the vans after being dropped off at various stops. Sometimes it was challenging to locate the van when it was time to reboard, Especially if it's your first time in the area. There were so many people, vehicles, tour vans, RVs, etc. The GC was such a beautiful sight to see. Nice sunny day, temp was about 90. It was my first time there and I was in awe at nature's beauty. However, I was VERY disappointment that the tour did not include a stop in Sedona as listed on the Detours website. I didn't learn of this change until the night before the trip after my credit card payment was already processed. I was told that Sedona was removed from the tour due to ADOT's strict regulations on the number of hours the guide/driver can be on the road. Okay, this is understandable but why is the stop still listed on the website? My reservation was made about 3 weeks in advance. The person I spoke with apologized for the confusion but proceeded to offer other tours to Sedona that were leaving the next day for only $139 per person. Sounds like bait and switch to me. At any rate, the GC is beautiful and if you do not want to take that drive and wrestle with all the traffic, a tour could be the way to go. You could also park in the little town of Tusayan, buy park passes and take the shuttle buses to the various overlook points. Oh, also be very careful when taking photos, selfies, etc. The day after our visit, a tourist fell 500 feet to his death after climbing over the railing at Mather Point. Again, a great place to visit but do your research, use common sense and be careful - Enjoy!

This was a very well organized trip and the guide was excellent and very informative. We were given ample opportunity for photos in various places and time to explore. Only a minor complaint: the trip described the bus with captains seats. They were just regular seats and not that comfortable.
