I was not sure what to expect with this plantation and I was a bit nervous about what our guide would share. I know there are people out there that want to forget about the horrible history of slavery and I was hoping that this tour would not whitewash our history. I was happy with the outcome. First, you start the afternoon by taking a coach bus to the plantation. Along the way, our guide, Mary E, gave us a history lesson about the city and showed a brief video about the plantation so that we were ready to go once we arrived. Once you arrive, you have a chance to visit the gift shop for snacks, a restroom break, and gifts. Mary suggested the ooey-gooey cake. I tried the red velvet and it was good (all sugar) We toured the plantation as well as the grounds with a guide dressed in period clothing. I learned a lot.
For the second half of the afternoon, we went into the bayou for a swamp tour. The boat ride was great and our tour was funny and informative. The best part was holding baby George. She is a sweet little gater about 1-year-old. After the tour you get back on the bus and Mary played some NOLA music for the ride back. She even gave everyone a homemade set of NOLA beads with a cute little alligator on them.
I highly recommend this tour. You really get your money worth!
