As a professional wildlife biologist, the swamp portion of the tour was a letdown. Seeing the tour guide feeding copious amounts of very unhealthy marshmallows to wildlife to lure them into view did not make me feel that the animals or their habitat were being respected or cared for. There has to be a better way to showcase the swamp and its inhabitants. The plantation portion of the tour was phenomenal. The staff at Oak Alley were extremely knowledgeable and I felt they treated the history of enslavement with a lot of respect and I could tell extra care was taken to humanize the enslaved people and not treat them as nameless people of the past. The idea of a grand antebellum house where rich southern plantation owners lived without sin was not romanticized. As a Californian who grew up learning about slavery from a textbook and had no physical connection to the places it occurred, I learned a lot.

The swamp tour guide was really humorous and fun!! Our tour guide Kate was amazing and very fun and knowledgeable. The bus driver Dominique was a great driver and really welcoming and friendly:)

Oak alley was great and the swamp tour was interesting. Would probably just drive ourselves next time though. Felt a bit rushed at the plantation due to a scheduling error on their part.
