The Needles Highway is more than a 14-mile road—it’s a spectacular drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen, and rugged granite mountains. The road’s name comes from the needlelike granite formations that seem to pierce the horizon along the highway. The roadway was carefully planned by former South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck, who marked the entire course on foot and by horseback. Construction was completed in 1922. Short stops at Sylvan Lake and for viewing unique rock formation called the Needle's Eye, so named for the opening created by wind, rain, freezing, and thawing.

Very good guide. Nice trip. There is no woody. Forget photo. You will be in an open air Jeep. 2-4 people may fit in covered cab.

Hi Gary - Thank you for your review. I'm glad you enjoyed your tour. We do have several Woody vans but they are popular and not always available, so we substitute with our popular Jeep Gladiators. I recommend that our guests contact us to discuss availability. Thank you again for taking time for your review. Be Well - Rich

If you want a tour guide, you can’t go wrong by choosing Black Hills Open Top Tours. Our guide Beth is the best tour guide, very friendly, so much knowledge on the area and history. She knows the beautiful spot to take pictures. We rode in a converted jeep and the weather is perfect. Mt Rushmore is amazing to see, Custer Park is beautiful, very scenic, we saw antelope. We had picnic lunch at Sylvan Lake that offered an amazing view. We went through the tunnel looking at Mt Rushmore, if was cool to see the monument. It was a beautiful sight to see the granite rocks around us. We saw herd of Buffalo 🦬 and some of them a few feet away from our jeep. We also saw Prairie Dogs, Prong Horn, we even fed the Burros. We had a Wonderful experienced. Thanks to Black Hills Open Top Tours.

Howdy Geraldo - Thank you so much for your very kind review. I'm glad you enjoyed your tour with Beth. She has been with us for several years and knows Custer State Park and the two monuments extremely well. She loves showing off the Custer Park wildlife and used to guide at the Omaha Zoo. Thanks again. Be Well - Rich

Small group on the tour today made it feel cozy and relaxed. Doug relayed information in a conversational way, not scripted stats or comedic routine. Open top part of the time and then rain in Custer Park. Decent lunch, not just a sub in styrofoam box. Questions for the Geologist taking the tour about the rock formations we were passing. Great stops, great views

Howdy Ms. Julie - I'm happy you enjoyed your tour. We get afternoon showers off/on during the summer. Mountains make their own weather patterns. That's why our vehicles have convertible tops. Thanks for taking time for you review. Be Well - Rich
