I booked a combined train ride from Anchorage to Fairbanks, and Northern Lights Tour (from Northern Alaska Tour Co.) via the Alaskan Railway. Much to my relief, the train trip and the tour were very well coordinated. You can tell they have experience working with each other. I received a complete set of informational communications from Northern Alaska Tour Co. after purchasing the tour and travel package. The information was very complete, and, if you read it thoroughly, it will answer all your questions on what to wear, when to meet, luggage, etc. The basic tour provides a 9 passenger aircraft flight from Fairbanks (where Northern Alaska is located) to a remote truck stop in Coldfoot, Ak. At this point you are about 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle where there is the best viewing of the Aurora Borealis. The truck stop motel is basic, but very serviceable if you are not expecting anything close to luxury; the food was fine (a bit expensive, but that's due to transportation costs). The 45 minute flight was beautiful, and relatively smooth. The pilot was informative and friendly. Once in Coldfoot you can do additional tours arranged by Northern Alaska Tour Co. that include viewing of the Northern Lights from 11:00 PM -- 3:30 AM when they are at their height (if they come out -- not a guarantee). You are driven to a little village of Wiseman, meet Jack Reakoff who is without doubt one of the most interesting people you will come across in your life. Jack looks like a college professor, but he's not (he is, however, a genius, with a wealth of diverse information on ecology, the Northern Lights, gold mining, area history, geology, hunting and trapping). You sit in his cozy spare cabin, drinking hot chocolate, listening to his stories, asking questions, and standing outside either waiting for, or looking at the Aurora. When you get tired of standing, or get cold (though you must dress warmly), you wonder back in to listen some more. Even if the Aurora is faint, or doesn't show up, you will experience the most peaceful atmosphere, a sky full of more stars than you can imagine, the moon casting so much light (from just a quarter moon) that the distant snowy mountains light up from the reflection. It was a beautiful evening, with just a faint Aurora that night. Also available are day tours in a van to the Brooks Mountain Range north of Coldfoot along the Dalton Highway to Atigun Pass (highest point of the highway). The scenery was spectacular, the feeling was that you were thousands of miles from civilization (except for the Alaska Pipeline which runs some distance away, but always parallel to the road). We reached the top of the Pass in blowing snow at about 30 below, but got a close up of a beautiful Dall Sheep and baby. I loved every minute of the trip because I knew I was somewhere where few travelers venture. We turned around to go back to Coldfoot when we were 155 miles from the Arctic Sea. Northern Alaska also arranged a short (too short for the price) 30 min. dog sledding experience. I enjoyed that as well, but would have liked to go a bit further to have more time experiencing this unique experience. We returned to Fairbanks in a nicely equipped travel van with an informative guide. We stopped at the pipeline to learn about it, we stopped at the point on the Dalton Highway where the Arctic Circle intercepts it (and got certificates!), we made a stop on the frozen Yukon River to walk on it and take pictures, and we got to go sledding. Still, it was a long ride back to Fairbanks. Were I to do it again, I might take the 45 min. flight back. Northern Alaska coordinates everything with the folks (mostly young adults) at Coldfoot who take care of the rooms, food, and all the tours. Everything went off without a hitch. It was a well planned and well executed tour that all took place almost in the middle of no where. Not an easy thing to do! Nancy at Northern Alaska Tours was always helpful, and answered all my questions, and booked all the extra activities without a hitch. Again, it is a very well run company that do what they promise. I would highly recommend them.
