I hate to give bad reviews and spent a couple of days considering what to say about our Canyon X tour. We were significantly disappointed. Our tour guide was very nice and quite knowledgeable. However, the tour itself was maddening. We thought we were going to explore a fascinating canyon and soak up info on the place. What we were subjected to, in actuality, was just a selfie venue for our fellow tourists.
In the two hours that we were on site, probably 10 minutes of that time were spent actually exploring and moving and learning. The rest of that time was spent watching people take pictures of themselves and each other. No one in our group seemed interested in the place, but seemed obsessed with photographing themselves. This included large family groups and pouting, wanna-be Instagram models. We just basically stood in a slowly moving group and waited on people as they took picture after picture--not of the canyon; of themselves. We crept along SLOWLY.
And, sadly, this whole frustrating selfie ordeal was fostered and encouraged by our tour guide (probably at the direction of the operator). The wife and I had no idea what we were in for. Had we known, we'd have walked out of there and not looked back. Here is what I suspect is going on. Canyon X is a small place and they book a lot of time to see it. You don't need all this time to cover such a tiny place; there is much time to kill. Thus, it creeps at a snail's pace while tour guides encourage non-stop, maddening photography sessions at every few paces. Posing, clicking, posing, clicking, clicking, posing, clicking, on and on.
If you dislike moving and exploring interesting slot canyons, but do like being pressed into a group of narcissistic strangers that are being enthusiastically encouraged to take thousands of photos (no exaggeration) of themselves and their friends, this might be right up your alley. Admittedly, I haven't taken the Antelope Canyon tours and they may be exactly the same way. Beats me. But, if this doesn't sound like much fun, I would encourage you to avoid this tour.
The operator can fix this experience and I hope they do so.
