What an awesome way to see the Spencer Glacier. We boarded the Alaska Railroad train for a very scenic and relaxing ride to the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop. On the train, we met Brooke, who was one of the river guides. She was very friendly, helpful and informative. Once at the Spencer Glacier stop, we disembarked. and after a short bus ride through the wilds of Alaska, we arrived at the beach, where Personal Flotation Devices were waiting. After a short safety briefing, we boarded our rafts, and headed into the 34 deg water where we got close and personal with the icebergs floating in the lake. Robert, our guide for the trip, was able to give us lots of information about the area, and the glacier. Entering the swifter water of the Placer River, we began our 7.5 mile float down to the take out point. Along the way, we saw beaver dams, avalanche areas, and a few hand build bridges.
