This was our first trip to the Grand Canyon ever, with 5 kids ranging from 8 to 13. We were originally going to drive to the South Rim from Williams where we booked a hotel but my sister-in-law read about the Railway and was fortunate at a last minute to book the round trip train as well as our hotel stays at the hotels both in Williams and up at the rim in Maswik Lodge (I think this was the “package”). It was the right decision - we didn’t have to drive the 2 hours up and then down from the canyon (I had already driven hundreds of miles seeing Zion and Bryce), the Railway hotel was excellent (clean and convenient, even historic), the buffet at the Railway hotel was so enjoyable and they even had live music, an acoustic guitar player who played our favorites, and the train ride was fun and even included a cowboy show with a fake train robbery! The South Rim is great if you like touristy things like gift shops, and there were many places to catch a view of the Canyon because there is a free shuttle which goes around the park. Part of our package also included a bus tour of two viewing points from the South rim. You will want to bring singles with you because in addition to tipping the hotel maid (at Railway and at Maswik) you will also want to tip your train guide (each train car gets its own), the tour guide, and even the cowboys as they come through during the robbery. Enjoy!
