As a couple who comes regularly to St. Augustine, on this trip we wanted to see something we hadn't seen before. We read great reviews on Trip Advisor about this spot, and I agree with all of them. 😀 Located on Avilles St., ( the first street in America), you sense a quaintness and the history everywhere you look. From the stone/ brick road to ancient coquina ( crushed shell) covered buildings, it transports you even further into history than the city itself. Upon entering the Spanish military hospital, we were greeted by a woman dressed in clothes of the time, in full character . She welcomed us with a brief introduction to what was happening in the area at this time , and information about the hospital and it's role. Her knowledge on medicine at the time, herb remedies, medical care of patients, and the Spanish, highly trained doctors who brought that knowledge to America, kept out attention, as she guided us from room to room. The antique surgical and dental instruments were fascinating to see and hear about, as well as the conditions they provided for their patients. There is a gift shop as you exit, ( check out the amazing herb soaps), back on to the same street. Across the street are several restaurants with outdoor eating options, to sit an talk about what you just experienced. Lastly, while we have come for 25 years to enjoy the beaches, restaurants , and favorite " touristy" spots, we had never explored this end of town, and did not know of the existence of this hospital until we came on Trip Advisor , looking for something. New to see. It is very much worth your time, to visit. Great for families with middle school or high school kids, or retires who will get a chance to sit a bit, maybe know some of the history already , and anyone with medical/ pharmaceutical interests. GREAT spot to see. Allow an hour, and you will be impressed,mI'm sure with all you see and learn here. Also...worth noting ...it is air conditioned! 😅

We visited this attraction not really knowing what to expect. This quickly became one of the best places we visited. The doctor(in period dress) who narrated our tour was extremely knowledeable and we learned a good deal about medicine in thhe early times of St. Augustine. Amoung the topics visited were a hospice-like room in the beginning of the tour, surgical techniques, hospital room, protical and apothecary. Was really worth the admission price!

This museum was on our last list of things to do in St Augustine - and I regret not going sooner. I read online they took you through surgical procedures of the day, but I had no idea how in depth and awesome it was going to be. These guides really knew what to do. They walked us through the front part, talked about the medical practices of the day and how they involved, and brought us right in the room where Spanish soldiers were and showed us all sorts of medical instruments and explained in depth what happened! The man doing the tour of this room even paid attention to us although he was talking a bit fast - then again, the tour time is meant to be around 40 minutes, and we dealt through it in 30, but there was so much information to cram in! They also explained the herbs and different tonics to cure what ailed you back in the day - and this is a treat, they even gave us a herb guide that explained how many different herbs would be used in the day to bring back home with us. When we walked out through the garden, we walked right back inside the welcome center to ask if there were comment cards or something we could fill out to let their boss know they were doing a great job! Really worth the 6.30$ we spent on it - my girlfriend all the way from Sweden instantly lit up about everything they explained, and the guides were very informative and really knew their stuff. They also offered suggestions of other places around town to satisfy my girlfriend's medieval love. Overall we're glad we went through this - it will surely leave a lasting impression and we hope to go back one day for a refresher.
