We took the 1880 train from Hill City to Keystone, where the bus picked us up for the rest of our day. This 9 hour tour was worth every cent! After a rainy start with the train ride, the sun came out and it was a lovely day. The rain didn’t spoil the train ride, with narration on the sights and history of the area it was very informative. We had a little less than an hour in Keystone before the bus picked us up, just enough time to walk through the Main Street area. Our bus driver, Pastor Bill, was a riot! He has a great sense of humor and made the day especially fun! We spent just enough time at Mount Rushmore and Crazyhorse, had a great ride through Custer National Park-saw Bison up close, Longhorn, deer and cows. The Needles Highway ride was the best! Our driver, Bill, made the experience very, very memorable and added a lot of sites we wouldn’t have seen if we did this on our own! A lunch stop at the lodge was good, although I wouldn’t recommend the buffet, I was told it wasn’t worth the $14. I had a delicious salad with cranberries, nuts and the most delicious vanilla vinaigrette I have ever had, yes vanilla vinaigrette, it was great! After a very full day, Bill dropped us off at the train station in Hill City, right on time. This was a fantastic way to see the sights in the area, and Bill showed us many things we probably wouldn’t have seen or noticed on our own. Highly recommend this for anyone, families, couples or those traveling alone.
