This was a very powerful and informative tour. Our guide knew the history so well, and alluded to its ongoing impact on our society (and was very good about inviting and answering questions). I think I’m probably similar to most white northerners in having little to no clue about the extent to which slavery existed in the north, and how important it was to the financial development of the US as a whole, not just of the southern states. This is essential education.
The African Burial Ground National Monument is a very sobering, powerful and hope-giving experience. It is so well done. It’s worth planning to spend additional time there (where the tour ends) after the tour is over, because there is much to learn and absorb. I highly recommend the tour.
