Myself and my husband along with friends visited La Jolla in August 2018. La Jolla is fantastic! I so want to live here!!
We booked in advance to do the Sea Kayak and Cave Tour. I recommend you book in advance as they were extremely busy and I saw people at the desk being turned away as they had not pre booked.
We were greeted by the most friendly, coolest guy I have ever met - he could only be described as a dude!! He checked us in easily, explaining the format of the tour, we signed our waivers, he sorted us a locker, and sunglasses floats.
We we taken to the changing area and given a life jacket and helmet each, all cleaned from the people who used them before us. We then went outside the front and met our tour guides, Emmy and Aiden. They were awesome!!
We, along with the rest of the group (approx 15 people), walked the short walk to the beach, where the kayaks and paddles were waiting for us. Everything we needed to know was explained to us (how to hold the paddle, how to get into the kayak, what to do if we get into difficulties, where to initially paddle to so we could all meet up etc etc) and there were other members of staff there to help us get on our way.
We kayaked out to the buoy we had been shown from the beach, with Aiden leading us and Emmy at the back of the group. I felt in safe hands the whole time.
Aidan began by explaining a little about the scenery, what wildlife there is and what we might see, and what we were going to do. It was all extremely interesting for a city girl from the UK. Aidan and Emmy then swapped and Emmy led the way towards the caves. When chatting to Emmy, it turned out that she had lived for a while in Manchester UK, exactly where we were visiting from! It was nice to swap stories about our home towns, she was really personable and friendly.
We kayaked into the caves, which I was feeling a bit nervous about, but their professionalism and obvious experience in guiding us really set me at ease.
All in all we were on the water for about an hour and a half, and it seems with kayaking, I have found a sport I can do! My husband was pleasantly surprised that he didn’t have to do all the kayaking alone!
We were very lucky in that we saw garibaldi fish, so many seals, and even two dolphins! It was a magical and fun experience and one that I would whole heartedly recommend to anyone living in or visiting La Jolla. I will be back!!
