Night and day experience between showing up on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. It was a mob scene at 1 pm on Saturday afternoon. There was a 2.5 hour wait if you didn't have a ticket. But even if you DID have a ticket, I can't see how it would be enjoyable with such a crowd.
We weren't going to wait 2.5 hours and since we had schedule flexibility, the cashier suggested we come back for the 8 am tram the next day (Sunday). She said 8 to 10 am is a quieter time. (Note: 8 am tram only available on weekends).
What a difference! No cars backed up on the road to get in, no people in the ticket line, and plenty of room on the tram car. On the way back down, we had it to ourselves! The restaurant is not open that early, but there was a small cafeteria. The gift shop was open (some lovely items).
As to the experience itself: it is a steep and fast ride. In wind, the car can move from side to side and even hit the tower. Even in non-windy conditions, there are moments when the tram car swings. This is probably not a good idea for people with a fear of heights or who get startled by sudden movement.
The view is spectacular. Witnessing the topographical change is something special. Remember that it's thirty degrees cooler at the top, so dress accordingly, especially if you want to spend time outside on the viewing decks or on the trails.
So, you have been warned. On weekends, go early to have a much more pleasant experience!
