We are locals with season passes so casual treks up the mountain on a whim are easy. Ticket prices are high, but it is an expensive operation to maintain. It seems criminal to charge people 12 dollars for parking which should be part of the tram ticket price. The walk in would be over two miles and over a 1,000 feet of elevation. Face it, you are driving. It is fun to have retained the original 60's architecture. The updating is minimal though, probably just ADA and building code upgrades. Most of the staff are welcoming and friendly considering this is a high volume tourist attraction. The security people at the gate can be a bit less welcoming. Go early with the hikers and rock climbers and before the flood of tourists arrive. It is a great escape from the heat and has spectacular views for just an 11 minute ride. They offer a wide array of amenities of very mediocre quality. Food services are run by corporate contractors which is why everything reminds you of a college cafeteria or national park. I am told that the COVID era staffing shortages have led to a dive in quality and frequent closings. Hopefully that will improve with time. I do wish this fantastic place could be upgraded some day. It is a diamond in the rough. I guess given its popularity there is little incentive to invest that much capital. As a local it would be great to actually have a good restaurant at the top with the tram ride included. Wishful thinking.
