Stopped by BWD's shop today in search of great personalized surf lessons. There were alot of choices on the beach but it was worth it to stop here.
Dave's shop is great, all new gear, great staff, really really friendly and wiling to help you out. Love looking at all those trophies, so when you step in this shop you know there is a staff here that knows what they are doing.
I had been taking private lessons for myself and 13 year old daughter for the past 6 years. Mike and the staff were great today, as they always have been. I rented a board and they gave me the absolute perfect board suited to my ability. I was able to stand up on this board immediately. But the real reason to stop here today was the top notch local surfing knowledge and feeling of Ohana. Mike and the other instructors clearly are very knowledgeable about local conditions and how and exactly where to catch a wave. I can tell you if your a beginner and never surfed this location you owe it to yourself to stop at this shop and take a lesson. There are so many nuances to this sport and if you don't know them you;ll end up paddling after waves all day and catch nothing. These guys give you the skills you need so that you'll get up on a wave, and after the lesson you can go out and catch one. Case in point is my 13 year old daughter who have been taking lessons from Mikey for the past 6 years. This morning we meet mike at the shop, grab boards, and out we go. Immediately she was up on the first wave with ease. Perhaps most important is the feeling of safety you get with these guys. Mikey is a Waterman, and that still means something here, or at least it should. You have to be able to trust your instructor with your kids to keep them safe, as the currents and waves(and other surfers) should not be taken lightly.
So a big Mahalo to Mikey, Josh, the excellent photographer(great pics thank you!!), that cool surfer chick behind the counter, and the rest of the staff at Big Wave Dave's. Great experience and we'll be back!!
