Join Coastal Kayak Charters for a small group guided kayak tour of the Shell Key Preserve. We are St Pete's top rated kayak tour company and focus exclusively on small groups and private tours. Our trips offer more personalized service and better wildlife viewing opportunities while out on the water. We will explore hidden mangrove tunnels (tides permitting), shallow seagrass meadows, and stop on Shell Island for time to swim, look for shells, or just relax and enjoy the beach. Our tours are designed for beginners and experienced kayakers alike. We use stable user friendly kayaks that provide a great paddling experience. We primarily use double kayaks unless you have an odd number in your group. If you prefer single kayaks they are available through our website. The weather was perfect. The tour was about 3.5 hours and we paddled a little over 4 miles. We crossed open water and passed through many mangrove tunnels. It was fun to make your way through. We took so many pictures. Saw lots of birds, a jellyfish , tons of fish jumping out of the water, white pelicans and a fin of a juvenile shark. The water was clear and shallow. My favorite part was stopping at a small island pass where we beached got out collected some shells and dipped in the water. Super fun! Great time out on the water. Our tour guide was Taylor. She was fun, personable and very knowledgeable regarding the tides and the wildlife. Things I wish I had for my personal comfort: a hand towel and a seat cushion or towel to sit on. I found myself to be a little sore and had to reposition a lot. Your hands get wet and the paddling motion rubbed the skin. A towel might have helped with that. Definitely bring water. They conveniently offer the use of dry bags so I could have packed those things. Also, maybe wear a hat. The glare off the water may make you squint the whole time if your sunglasses aren’t polarized or tighter to your face. Also, the tour site warns you too but wear sunscreen and go the bathroom before you go. There is no public restroom anywhere.

We had a wonderful and very informative trip with Taylor. She was very knowledgeable about the birds, shell fish and mangroves. Afterwards she sent us photos and a map of our specific route thru the tunnels and out to the Shell Key beach. It was a beautiful day. The company is well organized and supplies everything including dry bags for valuables.

I come out from California every quarter for work and this trip will forever be on my list. This was my second tour with this company and I just loved it. So much beauty and wild life. And each time our tour leads are filled with so much information. This time Captain Dalton and in the past Olivia. We saw a lot of dolphins on this trip and was even blessed to see up close a mama and calf in a feeding frenzy. This trip is definitely good for the soul.
