Marvel at its outdoor Lake Pit, oozing with bubbling tar; travel back in time among the prehistoric plants of its Pleistocene Garden; and explore its active dig sites, where it seems excavators uncover something new daily. The museum itself features its own wealth of offerings. Scope out the fossils of prehistoric mammoths, saber-toothed cats, wolves, and ground sloths, or take an opportunity to watch paleontologists working in the Fossil Lab on their most recent finds. My family and I went to the la brea tar pit museum and the park. This was an awesome experience to “travel” back to ice age Los Angeles. It was awesome to see the remains from animals such as giant ground sloths, dire wolves, American lion, saber tooth cats, columbian mammoths, mastodons, and other animals. Each of the displays were informative. Our kids enjoyed the ice age encounter activity. We wished the museum was bigger though.

If you like learning about the ice age and the extinct animals from this time, this is the museum for you. The tar pits outside are smelly and it is amazing to think of the animals that got trapped and are now being actively found in them. The museum itself has loads of skeletons and is really informative. There is an active research lab where you can watch scientists at work. Before coming we got differing views on whether we should go, but so pleased we went as I would have hated to miss it.

We visited the outside tarpits before we went into the exhibits. That was really interesting to see actual tarpits.
