I live in New York and have been to this museum several times in the past but never in the summer and never when I'm with guests who I'm trying to keep track of. Oh my! It is crazy crowded with camp groups and tourists from the line in the hot sun outside waiting to go through security to virtually every space we visited. I can't imagine trying to keep track of small children in here, as it is really loud and crowded and there is soooo much to look at and distract you. A few notes; 1) the museum admission is actually "pay what you wish" but you can only do that if you wait in line at the museum (rather than buy tickets on line, which definitely speeds the process once you're through security), 2) the movies are pretty great and provide a bit of a respite from the craziness of the exhibits; and 3) check the exhibits on line first so you know what you want to visit and don't get totally overwhelmed just walking into the place. Just be forewarned if you go, particularly with small children. Or maybe wait and go in the winter on a weekday in the late afternoon.
