The train can accommodate a motorized scooter if it is no wider than 25 inches. There is a special lift to lift the scooter onto the train.
Please note: Arizona doesn't observe Day Light Savings and switches between MST (Mountain Standard Time) and PST (Pacific Standard Time) depending on the season.

Please ensure 1 person per group wait in line for ticket exchange. Face masks will be highly recommended. Social distancing will be practiced on train platform and on the train. Seating on board the train will be limited to maximize social distancing, and guests will be asked to promptly take their seat keeping aisles clear and to remain seated except to use restrooms.

I was expecting much more of a 'first class' experience for the $$ spent. On a train that means white jacketed attendants, seat side service using real dishes and glassware and the finest food - even buffet food, that can be prepared and served in the city of departure. What did I get? Inane narration, coffee in paper cups, a box with a sticky muffin in it and watered down juice in a plastic cup. The open platform car needs a good bath and there were no chairs to sit on the platform. Not worth the upgrade in this instance.

We were visiting AZ and decided to go to the Grand Canyon while we were there. While doing some research on our trip there I came across the Grand Canyon Railway as an option to travel and get to the park. The entertainment started off with a 15 minute show at their Wild West set up before getting on the train. I booked it and was very pleased with our time on the railway. We booked the Pullman car. I really enjoyed how we could make the seats face each other and those particular cars were older and more authentic for the ride. We were also right next to the Cafe car which had beer, wine, and a ton of snacks. That kept everyone in my family happy and enjoying the ride. On the way there they had a cowboy come in our car and play some music. On the way home, we had a "robbery" on the train too. It was pretty cute! Our Passenger Service Agent was Dennis, and he was just fabulous! He gave us coloring books and crayons for the kids, tips and things to see at the Grand Canyon, a bookmark, child inspirational sayings, collector cups, a thank you to my husband in the Air Force just to mention a few of the nice cute things he did for us as passengers. We got to see the landscape of AZ on our way and passed by a few abandoned ranches, which I thought was pretty neat. The train dropped us off right in the park. It was very nice to not have to worry about parking or driving to the Grand Canyon. To be honest, I enjoyed the train ride more than actually being at the Grand Canyon. They truly made the experience of getting there quite an adventure and I would highly recommend taking the train ride to the Park.

My wife and I took the train as a relaxing way to get the canyon and weren’t disappointed. We had tickets in the dome car in both directions and were under the care of Conya Rae, our Passenger Service Attendant. She did a lovely job of pointing out sites along with the way and sharing history of the train, northern Arizona, and the local area. Along the way we had musicians who came through the car, a different one in each direction. Both were good, the one on our return was more to our liking but both were solid musicians. You have about 3 hours at the canyon which was enough for us. We were able to walk the 1.5 miles to Yavapai Point and back with no trouble, taking plenty of time to sit and enjoy the view all along the way. There’s not a lot of food options, so bring some with you. That is something I wish we had done differently. The restaurants that are there require reservations that are booked well in advance. The train, when not in pandemic times, seats over 1000 passengers, but they told us that we were at about 1/3 capacity. I felt they did a good job keeping people distanced and cleaning things and wasn’t at all uncomfortable. Though it might be noted that many folks were openly sharing their vaccination status, which may be the new norm. It is not a quick ride but it forces you to slow down, which I found wonderfully helpful. You can take the train up and stay the night at a lodge in the park. They will transfer your luggage. We did not do that, but it seemed an equally popular option to the day trippers.
