I went (by myself) on Monday July 17th at 7am. I drove from Honolulu/Waikiki and it took about 30 minutes to get there (I beat the traffic). I was the first one there and I met Jimmy and Juan. Jimmy said expect to see about 15-20 sharks. I pre-ordered for them to Video tape me but I guess he dropped the ball and didn't have his equipment. Oh well. We were a group of 8. A group of 4 guys and 3 girls. We headed out about 3 miles off the coast. We set anchor and the girls saw some dolphins poppin up near the boat. I waited for the sharks and I saw a couple of them. Then I saw a big one swim under the boat. No wonder there was no sharks showing up. The big shark was a Tiger Shark. We got lucky because according to the website, the Tiger Shark shows up a couple of times a year. Jimmy let me jump in the cage and actually he let me stay in the cage for both groups. I got really lucky. The Tiger shark actually came up to the cage and just stood there. You can see his eye look at each one of us. I can't believe how big she was. I wanted to touch it so bad but at the same time I was scared. I would do this again but chances are the Tiger Shark would not show up again. Still I recommend this to anyone. Check out their website, they had a great white show up in December 05.

This is an excerpt from my trip report on the Oahu forums... Friday 5/12/06 Today is our shark dive with Hawaii Shark Encounters. This was the only organized tour we had arranged ahead of time. We signed up for the 7:00 dive, which meant a 6:30 check-in in Haleiwa, which meant a 5:30 departure from the hotel. Arrived Haleiwa in just about an hour (maybe a little less) and found the marina with no problem. The directions on teh website were spot on. There were only two other people on this trip out, this meant that we could get extra time in the cage. We got to the buoy area about 3 miles off shore. A shark showed up almost immediately – guess they recognize the sound of the boat (at least that’s what I’m telling myself). Anyway, we got our snorkel gear on and jumped in the cage. I was the first one in. I was so excited that I didn’t even notice how cold the water was and you quickly get over that. I think we were in the water for about a ½ hour. I could have stayed in there much longer. There were a few times that I was underwater just watching the sharks that I forgot I needed to breath and I had to remind myself. The whole experience was incredible. Our two guides (Don & Cody (?)) were just great. The trip was a highlight of our vacation, one of those experiences that you just have to do if you like sharks.

Mi wife and I recently went swimming in a shark cage off Oahu's north shore courtesy of Hawaii Shark Encounters. We found it from Oahu Revealed. My wife was hesitant to go and only went because she knew I was so excited about it. After the dive, she was just as excited as I was. We both loved it. It was so cool to see these animals in their natural habitat. For anyone who has ever gone to the zoo and enjoyed it, this is not to be missed. Think of it like a safari, but underwater. You are in their territory. On their website they say that the youngest person they took was three I just don't think it is appropriate for a three year old. I think that family must have been rednecks. Despite what you think, it really is a safe experience. Unless you are an idiot, you won't get hurt on this. Go early, the waves get high later on in the day and can easily make you sick. There were only four of us going in the water that morning so they guys on the boat let us stay in for over forty minutes. Wow. That was really cool of them. I talked to people down in Waikiki who knows these guys, yes, the do actually get in the water with the sharks, even the white shark. It is not a computer trick. This is a great experience that families, honeymooners, and tourists really should do before they leave the island. It is only $100 and well worth it. We will definitely do it again when we go back. Thanks guys for the great time.
