The site is worth seeing. The building is interesting, the views impressive, but the art ... is hard to understand. A film loop of a barking German Shepard? Really? I could have filmed my dog and been an artist. A room of huge pictures (sorry images) of dirt. Maybe I'm too old and/or uncultured but I don't see it. Some of the exhibits were more conventional and understandable. The meatpacking district is worth visiting. There are trendy stores and good restaurants. But I wouldn't go for the "art". There are lots of other museums in NYC.

I love NYC museums but had not been able to visit the Whitney on past excursions to the city. This time I was happy to have time to spend a rainy afternoon here. It's hard to give an institution a poor review but this was terribly underwhelming. At the suggestion of the person who took my $22 admission fee, I started on the top floor and worked my way down only to find two floors locked and many doors marked "staff only." One gallery that was open should have come with a pornography warning. Was it designed to provoke a response? Most likely. But mothers were ushering their children through trying to shield them from looking at some of the photos. Certainly there is more decent American art than this? In less than an hour I found myself back on the main floor and done. Maybe they keep some of the good stuff on the closed floors but unfortunately I won't be back to find out. My recommendation: stick with the other museums instead of wasting time here.

On a very rainy Saturday the Whitney was packed - too packed really to appreciate the art properly. The building itself is beautiful and would have great views over Manhattan and the Hudson on a nice day. We visited the Laura Poitras installation on the top floor, which would have been better with fewer people; the portraits section on the sixth floor; and the large open space on the fifth floor. The portraits section had some interesting stuff but also some more pretentious, less interesting pieces. The Michael Heizer installation on the fifth was mostly interesting to watch people take photos against the giant photos on the wall. It's certainly a large collection of American art and if you like modern art it's probably a must-see, and it was a good way to spend the afternoon. We had lunch at the eighth-floor cafe - 'toasts' and tempura veg, which were tasty if expensive.
