I'm not crazy about modern or contemporary art, but my friend, Maria, was visiting from London and wanted to see the Whitney. My former boss was the Chairman of the old Whitney and I could go there whenever I wanted, but seldom went. But because Maria wanted to go .... we went. As I expected, I wasn't thrilled (she was, so don't let my assessment stop you from going!). But the terraces, and the views from them, and the outdoor sculptures and the building itself, were worth the visit. Also, it overlooks the beginning of the HiLine, so it was fun to see that, too, from a different perspective. Don't bother eating in their ground floor restaurant, though. We ordered a "cheese plate", and were served a saucer size plate with three different slices of cheese on it, for like $15, and we had to ask for bread for it! The wine was $20 a glass! The restaurant is the biggest tourist trap ripoff I've ever seen, and I'm a native New Yorker!! So, the point is: go for the art, the view, or the neighborhood, but DON'T stop at the restaurant!
