The Needles Highway is more than a 14-mile road—it’s a spectacular drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen, and rugged granite mountains. The road’s name comes from the needlelike granite formations that seem to pierce the horizon along the highway. The roadway was carefully planned by former South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck, who marked the entire course on foot and by horseback. Construction was completed in 1922. Short stops at Sylvan Lake and for viewing unique rock formation called the Needle's Eye, so named for the opening created by wind, rain, freezing, and thawing.

Hi Fred - Thank you for taking time for this review. It was unfortunate that we did not have better weather . . . it's been a strange spring season. But, the Hills are great to visit year round and we are very happy you selected us! Thanks and Be Well - Rich

I was lucky in later October to get a single traveler tour with Rich. The open top Jeep was fantastic and the weather was beautiful. Mountains, wild-life, Mt. Rushmore, Black Hills, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Rapid City....The day I wanted the tour, Rich said he was not running that day due to the out of season. He called me back within the hour and said he would take me. The bonus of having the boss made it even better, but I could tell that all of his guides would be top notch. This tour is well worth it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Rich then took me through downtown Rapid City last and pointed out the best restaurants and hotels, of which I frequented both that night before leaving the next day to continue south on my wonderful road-trip vacation.

Hi James - Thank you for your kind comments. I had a great day touring with you too. We were fortunate to have great weather that late in the season and all the major destinations where still open. I hope you can return sometime to see the rest of the 'Hills'. Be Well - Rich To our future guests - FYI - We offer tours 7 days a week year round. Normally we require two adults minimum in order to provide a tour. However during the winter months (November through March) we offer Tours for Single Travelers. Please contact us for additional information. Thanks!
