What To Expect
1
The Mitten Buttes And Merrick Butte
As we set up the horses to assign based on experience, weight, and height. We'll give you and our horse buddies a proper introduction. After you two get acquainted, we'll start galloping towards the West Mitten Butte, where you get to be up close. Take pictures of the East Mitten and Merrick buttes at a distance. When viewed from the south, the buttes appear to be two gigantic mittens with their thumbs facing inwards. If you capture the Merrick Butte at an angle you see that it's between the West & East Mitten Buttes. All three buttes are commonly seen together in many popular films and images. Its elevation is over 6,200 ft making it one of the tallest buttes in Monument Valley.
2
Sentinel Mesa
Located northwest of The Mittens is the Sentinel Mesa, a mountain with an elevation of over 6,400 ft. Most of the mesa is in the state of Utah, but a small southern section of it is in the state of Arizona. This breathtaking mesa can be seen from so many points.

The horses are well looked after, the guides are knowledgeable and the scenery is just awesome. Our guide explained us a lot about the area and Navajo horse culture. The trail around the buttes is perfect for horsey pictures, and all in all it was my dream to ride in this scenery. However, i found it unprofessional that after paying a lot of money for the ride (it's not my first time on a horse, i know the prices and this is expensive), we discovered *at the end of the tour* that the total price EXCLUDED the tip and that the guides work for tips only. I know this is America but I also know that what we paid was more than enough for the company to pay the guide as well. I felt sorry for not tipping my guide but I just could not budget more money - and I felt a little ripped off too. Hence the two stars. Also, it was my husband's first time on a horse and he didn't feel super safe or super looked after - the explanations on how to ride were quick and approximate and no one really ensured he felt comfortable. It was mainly the horse who was a saint and looked after him.

This is the one of the most beautiful places weā€™ve ever been to. And the horse riding experience made it very enjoyable. Lauren was an excellent tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and kind.

My husband and I did a one hour horse ride. We loved it! Wynten, our tour guide, was very kind and shared numerous facts about the area with us. We did not pay for a private trip but happened to be the only ones on our trip that started at 9:00 AM. It was fabulous! The only ā€œhiccup,ā€ was that our conformation told us to meet at the blue guided tours booth at 8:30. We checked in there several times but no one from the horse tours was there. Eventually at 9:00, we drove ourselves down to the barn. There we were greeted, and we started our ride a little later. We did ride the horse for a full hour, really about 75 minutes. Overall, wonderful experience!
