Earlier this week, we took the tour. We saw a wonderful array of marine mammals and even some terrestrial ones like mountain goats and a black bear. The crew did a great job and the captain provided excellent narration during the whole tour and he impressed me with his scientific knowledge. It was clear he had done his research. He commented frequently on the main attraction - the numerous and beautiful but diminishing glaciers. He clearly lamented their decreasing size but never once did he mention the words “climate change” and its well documented impact on the Alaska glaciers. We come to find out from one of the crew that the parent company specifically prohibits the crew, including the captain, from using the words “climate change”. This is very unfortunate. Apparently, the company is placating climate change skeptics despite the overwhelming scientific evidence of warming temperatures in Alaska and impacts on its glaciers. The company is missing an incredible opportunity to educate and inform its clientele. It’s decision to purposefully overlook the science is also a bad business decision. Rather than trying to educate its clientele on the impacts of human induced #climatechange on the star of the tour - the glaciers - it has chosen a path which will only help to eliminate this outstanding tourist attraction and wonder of nature. It is difficult to recommend patronizing a company which willfully ignores science and, rather than being part of the solution, pursues a short-sighted and damaging business strategy. I look forward to a response from the company.
