3-Day Arctic Circle of Alaska Northern Lights Tour From Fairbanks

Overview
Discover winter in Alaska’s Arctic! Experience for yourself the legendary hospitality and authentic interpretation that made the original Arctic Circle Drive Adventure famous.  Travel north on the famed Dalton Highway. View the remarkable Trans Alaska Pipeline. Experience the mighty Yukon River. Explore up close the amazing arctic tundra. Cross the Arctic Circle and receive an official Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate.
NOTE - each tour is unique with our ever changing daylight. Depending on when you are traveling it is important your day may be more "night" then day light".

Spend 2 nights in Coldfoot, Alaska -- located directly under the Aurora Oval.  This is where the lights begin and branch out from here.  While no one can guarantee you the lights, you can help increase your odds by travelling at the right time of the year (when our nights are dark), get yourself as close to the source as possible (in Coldfoot directly under the oval) and then stay up all night.

Our tour guide Sabrena filled the trip with interesting facts and videos about Alaska and the Northern Lights. Once we arrived at Coldfoot Camp, we were oriented and set loose to explore, eat at the diner, and relax. We added on the extra trip to the cabin in Wiseman to make the viewing of the lights more comfortable with hot drinks and a fire to warm your hands, and I recommend that even though we didn't see the lights that night. We did see the lights the following night from camp and they were amazing! Major bucket list item achieved. Excellent customer service and very professional.

OK, so we know we were spoiled by the perfectly clear (=cold) weather all 4 days, but this operation knows what they're doing. They do a great job hiring and taking care of their personnel-and it shows in their professionalism, great attitudes, knowledge, etc. Can't say enough about how impressed we were with everyone we interacted with. While in Coldfoot we opted to do the night Aurora "tour" all 3 nights and while it can become a bit pricey, the experience-and aurora displays themselves-were priceless!

We were taken in a comfortable bus with an excellent tour guide who made nearly continuous comments for the entire trip. On this adventure you go about 6 hours north to the Arctic Circle North of the Yukon River on the Dalton Highway where you are met by a smaller bus based at the Coldfoot truck stop. After about 9 hours you arrive in Coldfoot. For another $79 you can go 18 miles further North to a tiny enclave which is at a higher elevation - nearly perfect for viewing the Northern lights, although we did see them at the truck stop as well. Restaurant at truck stop was open 24 hours, small bar too. Relatively decent food in the middle of nowhere. Accomadations basic but satisfactory and nicer than expected. Surprised that my T-Mobile phone worked there. Flight back to FaIrbanks on 3d day -- if clear -- is an experience of a lifetime. My second visit to this area, and have flown my own plane in that area as well. One of the most uninhabited remote areas on earth - and simply magnificent -- even if you don't see the Northern lights. We rented a car upon return to Fairbanks airport and drove up to the Chena hot springs for the night (must make reservations). Easy one hour drive also mostly through wonderful wilderness. Be sure to stop at the Mueseum of the North at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to learn about the history of the area etc. The travel package up to Coldfoot and back was excellent. Other outings are available at Coldfoot including a dog sled experience or a drive further north on the Dalton highway sometimes to see the Caribou herds. We went end of March which is very good viewing because sky is clearer then and less snow and ice driving and not so cold. Viewing is from midnight till 4 AM with optimum viewing around 2 AM. Bring ski clothing (long underwear, snow pants, etc.) -- it gets cold standing around outside.

Thank you bonemd for joining us on the Arctic Circle Aurora Overnight Adventure. We appreciate your detailed review for others to find the right adventure for their aurora experience. The option you mention early on is the Arctic Village Aurora - night time tour to Wiseman for aurora viewing -- like you say you can see them in Coldfoot - the tour to Wiseman provides a guided experience while you wait. Stay warm in a historic cabin, interact with your guide who is sharing what life is like year round in this remote location. Thank you again for choosing Northern Alaska Tour company. Best wishes for a bright spring! Kathy
