My husband and I signed up for the group tour of Canyon De Chelly, but because we were in Chinle during off season this past week, we ended up getting a private tour. Our tour guide was Leander Staley, the owner of Beauty Way Jeep Tours, a local family owned and operated business. He is a Navajo that grew up in the canyon and told us interesting stories of Navajo culture as well as educating us on the history of the canyon showing us ancient rock art, petroglyphs, cliff dwellings and told us about the folks who still live in the canyon. I highly recommend Beauty Way Jeep Tours for this fabulous tour. I think we got so much more out of the trip because of Leander's background. Definitely a must do for Canyon De Chelly!

At the end of December, a couple days before our reserved tour, it snowed in the area and we were worried about the road to Chinle, also about the cold weather. I called Beauty Way and was ensured that they have normal car for us instead of the open jeep, and that the snow actually added color to the canyon. I am glad my family of four made to Chinle and the tour with the owner Leander (i hope I spelled his name right) was a great experience and an unique opportunity to learn about Navajo people's history and culture first hand. Leander grew up in the canyon and owned a land in the canyon. He brought the canyon to life with wealth knowledge of the tribe history and personal stories. We stopped at many petraglyphy and cliff dwelling sites. The entire trip he did not stop telling us something and answered many of our questions. There is no way we look at the canyon the same way after the tour. It's not only a natural wonder, but full of life and emotion. As we further our trip towards New Mexico we spent more time to learn about Native American history and culture, thanks to the inspiration from Beaty Way Jeep. Highly recommend. I'd also like to point out that winter time is actually a good time to visit the canyon since there are few people, the rate for the tour lower too.

Beauty Way tour guides were local Navajo guides who had a great deal of knowledge about the history of the canyon. They drove us in SUVs that were enclosed, which was a big benefit in the deep dust of the canyon. They pointed out petroglyphs and cliff dwellings throughout the canyon, and also told how the Navajo fended off attemtped roundups by soldiers who were sending Native Americans on the Long Walk. We were out for about three hours and it was wonderful.
