45 Minute Semi-Submarine Tour of Catalina Island From Avalon

Overview
Come aboard Catalina Island's newest semi-submarine, the SS Nautilus, and enjoy a deep sea adventure 1,000 leagues beyond your imagination. The main attraction of this unique vessel allows six feet underwater viewing while staying dry so eager seafarers can get up close and face-to-face with schools of fish anticipating treats fired away from custom designed fish food torpedo buttons. Designed after America's first nuclear powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, the 45-minute journey is the destination itself as our captain and his crew ventures out on an exploratory mission to the undersea gardens of Avalon Bay.

Pretty cool "submarine". Actually a very cleverly disguised boat that never submerges. By the use of thousands of pounds of lead ballast they have the viewing "basement" where the passengers look out through huge round underwater windows under sea level. All the benefits and view of a near surface submarine without any of the perils. Very steep stairwell down into the viewing area. For a few bucks passengers can purchase food "torpedoes" and launch the fish food. Hundreds of fish gather around the "sub" for the fish food. Not handicap accessible. Family friendly adventure. Not cheap, but well worth it. All the views of snorkeling through Lovers Cove without getting wet.

This was a completely unique experience!! Went to view the protected underwater kelp beds. Saw about a million fish in a glass sided submarine. Very comfortable and informative. Everyone had their own chair and window. Potential downside (which was no issue for us but - No bathroom and high probability for seasickness, especially while docked. Purchase sea bands from local drugstore is the recommendation. For the return trip they moved us to topside which provided a good tour and was an option for anyone feeling a little queasy.
