Somes Sound is a fjard, a body of water running deep into Mount Desert Island, the main site of Acadia National Park in Maine, United States. Its deepest point is approximately 175 feet, and it is over 100 feet deep in several places. The sound almost splits the island in two.

Seawall Pond
Many of Maine's beaches are covered with cobblestones, but this coastline is unique. Powerful ocean storms created a massive seawall. As waves break, they carry rocks from the base of the beach and carry them up to shore. As the tides come in and out, heavier stones get piled at the top and smaller, lighter stones remain down the slope.

We had an absolutely fantastic experience with Pete as our tour guide in Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, and Mount Desert Island! Pete was incredibly knowledgeable and shared so much interesting information throughout the tour. His enthusiasm for the area was infectious, and it was clear he genuinely cared about our group. Pete was not only friendly and welcoming but also took the time to get to know us and ensure that we had the best possible experience. He even helped us plan out the rest of our stay and gave us great advice for our road trip back home. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide—highly recommend Pete for anyone visiting the area!

Our guide, Bill T., was very knowledgeable of the park and its history. We saw all of the key places on the island and we enjoyed learning about the history of the park from Bill. Our entire family enjoyed the tour.

Twenty years ago, my husband and I visited the Park WITHOUT a tour guide and really didn't get much of anything out of it. What a difference going on this 6-hour tour made this time around! Our guide, Bill, was fantastic. Because he is born and bred here (and his wonderful accent vouches for this), he is a fountain of information on the history of the Park and the Harbors and towns. He can tell you all about lobster fishing, scallop fishing, how the seas have changed over the last decades, all about the many towns you drive through, recent major storms and Nor' Easters, past fires (using maps and telling you stories that make you feel like you are there), and much more. He will also point out some of the summer cottages of the rich and famous while sharing some of his personal experiences that he had while working on some of these. And lastly, he will take you to see working/fishing harbors and even point out his home. :) The lunch spot that we went to with him was great by the way (lobster ceviche, lobster grilled cheese sandwich and honey butter lobster roll, all Great! Ask for Bill if you decide to go on this tour, you won't regret it.

A private tour is the best way to explore Acadia. Often people try it on their own and don't even understand what's so great. They only see what the big signs point to and miss the best parts.
