C.M. Russell Museum
Born in 1864 in St. Louis, Charles M. Russell grew up fascinated by tales of the Wild West. He traveled to Montana in 1880 and made a life on the frontier, working first as a cowboy and then a night wrangler, leaving his days free to observe and sketch working cowboys. Once a full-time artist, Russell moved with his wife the short distance from Cascade to Great Falls, where he built his home and studio. Over the course of his life he created around 4,000 works of art that reside in both public and private collections throughout the country.    Although primarily focused on the works of the local artist, the C.M. Russell Museum also includes numerous collections of other western artists whose works complemented the themes that so intrigued Russell throughout his lifetime as well as the original Russell Home and Studio.

This museum is a treasure. Russell's work is beautiful and tells the story of the American west so well. The exhibits are well organized and curated. The building is excellent as well. This is a don't miss on you drive through Montana. To bad more people don't know about this great museum and its contents.

I have seen Russell's work before in other museums but I didn't know that there was a museum in Great Falls until we came by it while driving. I was also surprised to find out that this museum admission included his studio and house tours also. I didn't know that he lived in Great Falls but I learned alot about him on this little tours. Worth the time.

If you like western culture and history, this is a must see. We thoroughly enjoyed viewing his artwork. A bonus was being able to tour through his house and studio, really great to see. We spent about about 2 1/2 hours here, which included browsing through their gift shop. A very nice museum with friendly staff.
