C.M. Russell Museum
Born in 1864 in St. Louis, Charles M. Russell grew up fascinated by tales of the Wild West. He traveled to Montana in 1880 and made a life on the frontier, working first as a cowboy and then a night wrangler, leaving his days free to observe and sketch working cowboys. Once a full-time artist, Russell moved with his wife the short distance from Cascade to Great Falls, where he built his home and studio. Over the course of his life he created around 4,000 works of art that reside in both public and private collections throughout the country.    Although primarily focused on the works of the local artist, the C.M. Russell Museum also includes numerous collections of other western artists whose works complemented the themes that so intrigued Russell throughout his lifetime as well as the original Russell Home and Studio.

As overseas visitors, we'd never heard of Charlie Russell but found the museum on TripAdvisor and had a morning to kill in Great Falls so decided to walk there from downtown. What a gem! This guy was an amazing artist and sculptor. His depiction of horses and their movement is incredible, and every painting seems to tell a story of the development of the old West. The museum charts the evolution of his artistic skills from early sketches to beautiful color dioramas of landscapes, animals and people. There is also a great gift shop there. The museum doesn't appear to be signposted from town and is located in a residential area, so make sure you have the address or use a satnav to find it. Well worth the effort.

Worth every penny and then some. Highly recommend this "must see" attraction. Has changing features that are worth continously visiting to view updates.

My mother in law came to visit from California, we looked for things to do in Great Falls. This was a great thing she really loved it. Was great for her in her late 70's all the way to the kids in their 20's. We all really learned a lot and enjoyed the day
