C.M. Russell Museum
Born in 1864 in St. Louis, Charles M. Russell grew up fascinated by tales of the Wild West. He traveled to Montana in 1880 and made a life on the frontier, working first as a cowboy and then a night wrangler, leaving his days free to observe and sketch working cowboys. Once a full-time artist, Russell moved with his wife the short distance from Cascade to Great Falls, where he built his home and studio. Over the course of his life he created around 4,000 works of art that reside in both public and private collections throughout the country.    Although primarily focused on the works of the local artist, the C.M. Russell Museum also includes numerous collections of other western artists whose works complemented the themes that so intrigued Russell throughout his lifetime as well as the original Russell Home and Studio.

If you're a fan of western art then be sure to visit this museum. A few other artists are featured but of course Charlie Russell's art is the main feature. Easy to navigate the museum. We couldn't do the House and Studio on this trip but my memory tells me it is well worth seeing. His personal items and illustrated notes/letters are awesome. Enjoy! Then go to the Roadhouse Grill just a few blocks over for lunch!

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede, the CMRussell Museum collected many of Russell’s paintings done for the Stampede in the early years Most were pictures depicting life as a cowboy or Native American in real life action poses. It was incredible to see so many originals in one place. This is an art museum not to be missed at any time of the year or at any special exhibit time!

The C.M. Russell delivers so much more than one might think: Russell's exquisite works from each period of his life are displayed and explained. Not only does one experience his genius, but the museum presents a superb exhibit about the bison: its uses to the Plains Indian, its almost-extinction, and its life today. The exhibit about the Calgary Stampede is excellent, too. For me, the most interesting were the Russells' home and studio, also on the grounds. Beautifully maintained, the visitor gains insight into the family's life. It's a must-see!
