Adults Only - Historic Red Light District Walking Tour

Overview
If you’re looking for something less familiar than “haunted history”—but just as entertaining—this daytime journey through the sex, class, and music of “Storyville”, our historic “vice district”, is just what the witch doctor ordered. Populated with legendary brothel owners, notorious criminals, crusaders for equality, and pioneering jazz virtuosos, this is a stroll through some of the most jaw-dropping history the state of Louisiana has to offer.

Thanks to the miraculous work of city archivists, as well as historians like the one who curated our tour, Hottest Hell is now able to resurrect this forgotten neighborhood through a combination of historic photographs, visual aids, and narrative storytelling. Each tour guests receives their own “blue book” - modeled after the printed ‘guides to gals’ that ‘Tenderloin’ visitors could purchase - to help better see what was lost when Storyville was replaced.

Our tours go out rain or shine. Intoxicated travelers will not be permitted.

We absolutely loved the tour! It gave us the opportunity to learn more about the raunchy history of New Orleans and how it is still resonates in the city to this day. Truly felt as though the tour was both for a history buff and the average person interested in the dark and seedy past. Plus, no questions were off limits! Our tour guide Christo was an awesome public speaker who really knew how to read the room and create a very kind, welcoming, and exciting experience! He and his team were also kind enough to create very intricately thought out materials for reference while on your walk. Highly recommend!

Thank you so much!! We realized that the Backatown stories weren't getting enough attention here compared to the traditional spooky tours and we put a lot of effort in to making them just as special and educational. Christo truly loves brining out the lesser-known history in our great city and we're delighted to hear you really enjoyed it. We really appreciate you taking the time to share this great review!

I took the 'Backatown' tour in May 2021 when I was visiting NOLA; Christo was the tour guide. Everything about the tour was phenomenal! One advantage I personally had given that it was on a weekday morning is that I was the only one on the tour, so it was easy to hear the tour guide, easy to keep up, etc; being the nerd that I am, I could ask as many questions as I wanted! It wasn't overly-crowded (as I was the only one), there were no other 'drunk tourists' or distracting people to detract from the experience, etc. On top of that, Christo was highly knowledgable about this fascinating aspect of New Orleans' history, and the tour information itself was riveting. The red booklet provided offered great insight and was a good visual aid to accompany the facts & stories presented on the tour. If you're interested in learning about NOLA's redlight history between 1897 and 1917 (ish), I'd highly recommend this tour. I personally am not aware of any other tour operators who offer a tour like this, and it's a cool alternative to your campy "ghost tour/haunted" tour which are a dime-a-dozen. While those are fun in their own right, this particular tour is a gem as it offers insight to a period of NOLA's history pertaining to sex, brothels, jazz music, drugs, etc... which is a large part of the city's history!
