Alaska Railroad Seward to Anchorage One Way

Overview
Departing from downtown Seward at 6pm, the Coastal Classic Train travels north along the rugged coastline of Turnagain Arm, with dramatic views of the Chugach Mountains plunging directly to the sea. At the end of Turnagain Arm, the tracks veer away from the road system into the backcountry wilderness – and what many consider to be the most scenic stretch of the Alaska Railroad, accessible only by train. Watch for views of massive glaciers, steep river canyons, and cascading waterfalls. The train arrives in Anchorage at 10:15pm.

Loved the dome train experience, which came with dinner. What a view! Comfortable and friendly crew/conductor. We did arrive 1/2 hr late due to regulation of staffing hours and having to change crews just before entering Anchorage. If you travel with luggage, make sure you have a good buffer for unloading the luggage crates. It took almost 3/4 hr to get it all unloaded under the tent, so one friend left without getting her luggage to make her flight. Fortunately, she was traveling with a friend who had a later flight and could check it in for her. I'm told this was an unusually large amount of luggage on this trip, and the train was full. But hey, this is mid-May and it's not even summer tour time, yet.

My earlier review (8/21) on the Anchorage to Seward part of our trip noted weak enforcement of masking. As a consequence, there were many passengers on that trip who chose not to mask and several were boastful about it to other passengers. On on this trip (Seward to Anchorage), one of the crew started the trip with a strong and effective announcement saying that all passengers WILL mask or be lead off the train in handcuffs as the other passengers cheered. He concluded the announcement with an upbeat message that brought it home in a very nice way. The compliance and overall mood was very positive as was the overall experience. Much appreciated!

Absolutely incredible. Definitely recommend the Gold Star. Each car is equipped with wonderful windows and a outside standing area that gives magnificent views of the Alaskan wilderness. The service is amazing. Great food and drinks. The train is super clean and everyone is Covid safe. It was the greatest train ride of my life. Highly recommended. We can't say enough good things about it.
