I had no idea what to expect. The Amish Experience at Plain & Fancy Farms is a little overwhelming. This trip, however, was ideal. Limited to 14 people, visitors have the chance to visit a dairy farm during milking, a home-based business, and then a final stop with a family. Beth, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and shared many of her experiences with us. This is a great tour if you truly want to learn about how the Amish live.

Amish Experience offers several different tours: Homestead and school house, a Farmlands Tour and Visit in Person (VIP). We wanted to do VIP but it is an evening tour and didn't work with our schedule, so we took a Farmlands Tour. This a 90 minute, driver-narrated tour of Amish farms. Doesn't sound exciting, but actually interesting and very educational. Even the kids were all ears for the duration. You drive around the farms and see how the Amish live and work while the driver describes their life and customs. We saw a farmer working the fields, house being built, many different farm animals, even camels on one farm(!), kids playing. You would see something different on every tour. There was one stop at an Amish business. If you are interested in how the Amish live, this was a very nice introduction.

We visited on August 27th. and founf it to be a very good experience having never known much about the the Amish people before. The short film at the start of the tour was indeed welcome as it prepares you for the tour. It puts you in a kind of frame of mind that you will be experiencing something with a difference; something you have never experienced before To see how the Amish lived and actually seeing them at work or washing as you go along brings back some memories of olden days. It was really a good day learning about these special people.
