I found the tour very interesting and the guide was knowledgable, could answer all of our questions, and was funny to boot! And my 9 year old son loved panning for gold (okay, so did I). I recommend this tour if you're passing through Idaho Springs.

If you are not paying attention, like us, it is easy to think this is another gold mine tour. The guide does emphasize that this is a tour of the mill and Argo tunnel, not a gold mine. This is after you pay and after you see the sign ā€˜Gold Mine and Mill’ painted on the building. Having said that since the mill was shut down after a flooding accident, it is mostly in tack. Most of the rooms retain the equipment from it’s glory days. Most of the tour is of the mill with a quick walk down the tunnel to a locked vault door that protects the area from leaking waste. At the end you have a fun chance to learn how to pan for gold. Even the worst of us tourists were able to find 3 or four gold flakes in our pans. Some had more. The tour guide was new, so he had a habit of talking away from the group as he was walking, making him hard to hear. Even so, he was very informative and answered all questions.
