Beneath The Streets Underground History Tour

Overview
Go underground on a 1-hour walking history tour through Seattle's original neighborhood. Our experienced guides lead small groups through, and beneath, Pioneer Square to the street level that existed in the 1890s. Explore underground pathways that were built more than 120 years ago, learning details on early Seattle history, why these spaces were built, and how they have been used (and misused) over the years. Marvel at how this once Indian encampment has since transformed into one of the 20 largest cities in the United States.

Beneath the Streets
Beneath the Streets focuses on factual, historical information that details the birth of our city, 1890’s architecture, and several other stories including the Klondike Gold Rush, Skid Row, and the Coast Salish Peoples that first inhabited the area. Our tour guides participate in workshops on cultural traditions and history with special guest historians and Native Tribal members as continual professional development.
2
Pioneer Square
We cover four city blocks of historic Pioneer Square and explore three underground passageways originally constructed in the 1890's. You'll see and hear the history of the neighborhood from both the original and current street levels.

My friend and I are retired teachers and wanted to participate in at least one tour that gave us a little bit of insight into the history of Seattle. This tour started less than 2 blocks from our hotel and right underneath the coffee shop that we were going to every morning for breakfast. The tour itself only lasted an hour but it was packed with information. There are a few steps to go up and down but nothing too difficult. I have bad knees and it was quite doable. Between this and visiting the Gold Rush Museum, I walked away with a pretty good understanding of the history of early days of Seattle.

Mike was great and really knowledgeable. You can tell he really enjoys history and making the tour a lively, positive experience. We learned a bunch about Seattle that we never knew. I'd recommend for a fun date night or family activity.

Great overview of the history of the area. Richard was a knowledgeable and friendly guide who made the experience extremely enjoyable and fun. Our tour only had 8 people so there was lots of opportunity to ask questions.
