Beneath The Streets Underground History Tour

Overview
Go underground on a 1-hour walking history tour through Seattle's original neighborhood. Our experienced guides lead small groups through, and beneath, Pioneer Square to the street level that existed in the 1890s. Explore underground pathways that were built more than 120 years ago, learning details on early Seattle history, why these spaces were built, and how they have been used (and misused) over the years. Marvel at how this once Indian encampment has since transformed into one of the 20 largest cities in the United States.

1
Beneath the Streets
Beneath the Streets focuses on factual, historical information that details the birth of our city, 1890’s architecture, and several other stories including the Klondike Gold Rush, Skid Row, and the Coast Salish Peoples that first inhabited the area. Our tour guides participate in workshops on cultural traditions and history with special guest historians and Native Tribal members as continual professional development.
2
Pioneer Square
We cover four city blocks of historic Pioneer Square and explore three underground passageways originally constructed in the 1890's. You'll see and hear the history of the neighborhood from both the original and current street levels.

Our tour guide did a great job. He had the personality and humor to fill in the gaps and was equally inclusive of adults and a middle schooler who was with our group. Ultimately, you are looking at empty spaces, so it takes someone with personality to bring it to life. Our guide, a former history teacher himself, did a great job of doing that.

The tour was informative but a bit brief at ~50 minutes. Our guide was knowledgeable but spoke way too fast to be easily understood while wearing her mask. While her presentation of history and issues was good, she followed many sentences with giggling which got old quickly, especially when the facts she was citing about the start of Seattle were sobering. We spent too much time above ground and too little underground which was the supposed focus of the tour. I expected to see more of the old first floor storefronts but, in fact, only saw one. All the other underground spaces had been sanitized and renovated to some extent so looked simply like basement spaces in various states of repair.

Our tour guide was fantastic! Really funny and caring. Even my 8 and 11 year old kids were entertained! I’d recommend this tour if you like history and geography. Thank you!

Lia, GREAT to hear! Sometimes it can be hard to keep kids engaged while on a 'history' tour so it is awesome to hear that yours responded so well to our guide, the stories told, and the sights along the way. Thanks for your post!
