Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour from Ketchikan

Overview
A MUST DO TOUR IN ALASKA! One of the highest rated tours offered along Alaska's beautiful inside passage.  Find out what life is like as a commercial fisherman from men who have worked in the rugged Bering Sea.  These guys are the real deal! On board the Aleutian Ballad, a boat that was featured on the Discovery Channel’s popular TV show Deadliest Catch, you’ll cruise through the calm, protected waterways of the Inside Passage with an expert crew, watching as marine creatures of all kinds are caught and hauled up on deck. Catch is then held in a live tank for observation before being released back into the wild. You’ll see king crab, box crab, octopus, rockfish, prawns and more, plus you may catch sight of other local wildlife like sea lions and porpoise.  This tour has also become world renowned for a spectacular encounter with eagles in the wild.

My daughter and I chose this tour simply because it seemed like a good one to kill time while my son & husband went ziplining. What an amazing way to spend our morning. I'd never seen the show Deadliest Catch, so I didn't really know about it except from watching the short clip video on our cruise site. We did book directly through the website (not the tour desk) which saved us about $50 per person. The crew were engaging, interesting, delightful, informative and willing to answer any and all questions. We learned about fishing on the Bering Sea, about their lives on the boat, about different types of crab and prawns, and even watched as they pulled up different crab pots. We were even able to hold some of the things they pulled up! A highlight of the trip was the number of bald eagles we saw! They crew feed the eagles right from the boat, so we had about 50 - 60 (maybe more) circling around us, swooping down to eat, and then back to their nests. It was spectacular! You can't go wrong by spending the day in Ketchikan with the crew of the Aleutian Ballad!

I'm a Deadliest Catch fan; so of course I opted to head out on my excursion in Ketchikan on the Aleutian Ballad's Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's tour. I was already dancing on sunshine in spite of the drizzly morning that greeted us in Ketchikan on May 22, 2012. Travis and a big smile greeted me near Holland America's ms Statendam and he pointed me in the direction of the short 2-minute walk to the Aleutian Ballad's dock. The tour did have a campy and kitchy feel to it; but it very entertaining and educational. The stop to view some 30+ bald eagles along with the feeding was worth the price of admission!! I think from the description of other family members that opted to go on a raptor center tour that I saw more eagles than they did! We watched them crew pull up various styles of crab pots and even got to hold a stone crab and a snow crab. Skies were overcast and a bit of intermittent drizzle, but it didn't dampen anyone's parade. The ampitheatre seating was covered and heated and they provided additional warm raincoats for those that needed them. Hot cocoa and coffee were also available; and we got some Pepperidge Farm goldfish as a snack on the way back to the dock. There's a nice gift shop onboard along with video of the rogue wave video from Season 2 of Deadliest Catch. Captain Dave along with Terry, Travis, and the girls were all cheerful and friendly and took time to chat with all the guests and take pictures. Everyone left the boat smiling and in a good mood and still with plenty of time to explore the shops and get back to our cruise ship.

This was my last excursion during my Alaskan Cruise and I can truly say that it was the best & most enjoyable thing I did! I couldn't talk my mother into going with me, so I went along all by myself. The Aleutian Ballad crew, especially Captain Derek, were all so welcoming and friendly--they made sure that everyone had a chance to touch, photograph or just get a good look at every kind of creature they pulled up. I'm a longtime fan of "Deadliest Catch," however, even those tourists who had never seen an episode were enthralled by the crew's fishing tales and the whole experience. It was a little chilly out on the water, but the tour even provided us with coats. In addition to the crabbing demonstrations, they also took bald eagle watching. It was a relaxing afternoon--we had beautiful weather that day--and at the end of the tour, the crew posed for pictures with everyone on board. If I ever make it back to Ketchikan, I will definitely take the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour again!
