Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour from Ketchikan

Overview
A MUST DO TOUR IN ALASKA! One of the highest rated tours offered along Alaska's beautiful inside passage.  Find out what life is like as a commercial fisherman from men who have worked in the rugged Bering Sea.  These guys are the real deal! On board the Aleutian Ballad, a boat that was featured on the Discovery Channel’s popular TV show Deadliest Catch, you’ll cruise through the calm, protected waterways of the Inside Passage with an expert crew, watching as marine creatures of all kinds are caught and hauled up on deck. Catch is then held in a live tank for observation before being released back into the wild. You’ll see king crab, box crab, octopus, rockfish, prawns and more, plus you may catch sight of other local wildlife like sea lions and porpoise.  This tour has also become world renowned for a spectacular encounter with eagles in the wild.

What a great adventure !!! We boarded one of the former Deadliest Catch boats in Ketchikan. This was the boat that had previously capsized in the Bering Sea. Fortunately, it had been totally restored and outfitted for crab tours. The crew onboard were so knowledgeable and entertaining. First, we visited the area where bald eagles habitated. There were nests to observe and a couple of bald eagles were curious enough to observe us...of course, the crew threw some enticing fish overboard. Next was an demonstration of how bait was loaded. The first traps that were pulled up contained snow crabs. We were encouraged to hold one and were given lots of information about their habits. The next trap contained Alaskan king crab. They were huge. Because of the danger of getting pinched, the crew held the crabs and let us take pictures touching the denizens of the deep. After the crab traps were pulled up, the next trap held octopus. Again, a crew member held the octopus even though it was trying to attach its tentacles to him. The excursion was most informative and entertaining. I would recommend this as one of a "must see" if you're in Ketchikan.

The Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour was by far the best excursion that I took on my most recent trip to Alaska. In fact I would say it ranks up with one of the best tours that I have ever taken. A great combination of history, story telling, marine education and wildlife viewing. This hands-on tour was well worth the price. Captain Dave, his wife, two daughters, Danny and Kiwi (plus the young lady green horn whose name I can't remember) were entertaining and incredibly accomodating in every possible way. We saw and held king crabs, rock crabs, snow crabs. Saw local Indina fissherman pulling in an incredible catch. Went "fishing" for eagles and got a great action pictures of eagles diving for their prey. The fact that the boat was on The Deadliest Catch was just an added attraction. A great time even if you have never seen the show.

We took the Bering Sea Crab Fisherman Tour while in Ketchikan on May 29, 2009 and we really enjoyed it. I'll preface my review by saying that I am a water lover, boat lover and a hardcore fisherman in my home state of Louisiana, so my love of this sort of thing may be a little biased. I watch the Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel and what takes place on this shore excursion is not as extreme as what you see on that show, although we did haul in 4 different types of fishing/crabbing apparatus. The entire trip takes place in a beautiful protected inlet 20 minutes or so from the cruise ship dock. The main idea behind this shore excursion is to see and hear about life as a Bering Sea Fisherman. The two main characters on board, Chief and Kiwi, each have been real commercial fisherman for over 20 years. The stories told by these men are the real thing as are the men themselves. You will gain a true appreciation for what it takes to catch many of the types of crabs that Alaskan fisherman fish for. One unexpected highlight of this shore excursion was seeing bald eagles up close. I do not know if the eagles are always in the area, though, so you may want to inquire if they will be there whenever you will be there. If you are a serious wildlife photographer, be prepared to take hundreds (maybe thousands) of pictures of the eagles. In my opinion, it was worth the time and money invested.
