Loved, loved, loved, the Hop on Hop off Bus in San Francisco. The best way to see and learn the history of the city.
We sat, listened and saw the city the first time round, then on second day, we hopped off at places of interest to us, walked around, then hopped on next bus that came within 20 minutes.
Excellent service, guides were fun and informative.
Highly recommend!!!

Best thing about Hop-on-hop-off bus is as name suggests you can stop anywhere, see what you want and rejoin bus. I found that if I stayed on and did whole round then I could decide which places i really wanted to visit that day. Alcatraz is a must just to see history and realize the advances our society has made - good or bad.

We had no problems using our pre-paid vouchers to go on the ferry to Alcatraz and was glad we had organised this prior to arriving in San Francisco as they were booked up on the day and there were some disappointed tourists expecting to rock up on the day and get tickets. The big bus tour ran regularly and stopped at all the sight-seeing stops we wanted and there was no problem with hopping on and off. Remember to take a jacket when going across the Golden gate bridge on the top of the bus as it gets cold and windy even on a nice day due to the often present sea fog. A good way to see San Francisco.
