Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

Learn about the role the church played in the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham and the history of the church bombing that tragically killed four little girls.

Clay did an amazing job telling the Civil Rights Movement story in Birmingham. He knew the facts and told them with clarity and passion. We have done many tours and I believe it to be the most complete and educational. I would give it a ten.

For anybody with an iota of interest in civil rights issues, Clay’s tour is an absolute must. I considered myself moderately knowledgeable about this period of US history, but came away reeling at the depth and breadth of information Clay gave us. For three hours we were entertained and riveted, as he told the story of the men, women and children of Birmingham and their fight for justice and human rights. He is passionate about his subject (and the city) and gives an unflinchingly honest account of the events that focused national and global attention on this part of the world. They say that sunlight is the best disinfectant and this tour is an important step towards truth and reconciliation.

Great tour! Clay is a wealth of knowledge with excellent delivery. He was pleasantly accommodating in adjusting our tour schedule as cab et al. transport service into Birmingham was not available (this is not uncommon I'm told). Tour information is earnest, educational, stimulating and unapologetic. Clay referenced supportive literature related to tour topics, and presented a holistic overview for both past and present Birmingham. We were totally absorbed. J&L
