Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

16th Street Baptist Church

Learn about the role the church played in the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham and the history of the church bombing that tragically killed four little girls.

See where the march protests ended in Birmingham and learn about groups fighting for Civil Rights in Birmingham

Clay arrived at the hotel as agreed and exactly on time, he then advised us that we were the only participants. It was an excellent tour Clay is very knowledgeable and passionate and told us lots that we knew nothing about. He answered any questions and talked about this time in the history of Birmingham as well as telling us about other more current things. Don't miss the chance to find out, even though it is sometimes upsetting to realise how people can treat each other. Food for thought, thanks Clay. Well worth the time and money, don't miss out.

Clay, our tour guide is a walking encyclopedia! His knowledge about the civil rights movement in Birmingham and also the town's history is amazing! He is also personable and considerate. The tour went overtime due to him taking the time to thoroughly answer our questions. I would do it again!

My friend and I took the “Fight for Rights” tour with Red Clay Tours today. It was a very impactful three hours of my life.
