This museum was an amazing surprise and we were so delighted to have had the opportunity to visit. It is a very old museum so for some of the exhibits, their locations and the atmosphere, you might feel as though you have stepped back in time, all the more pleasurable for real history buffs. There is an area of science and interesting exhibits in the very beginning which is very modern, then you begin to step into a space that takes you literally with each step back in time. The stairs and location of the exhibits add to the aura of intimate discovery. If the stairs are a bit much you can take a totally modern lift which is in an area near a lecture area. As you go higher and higher into the museum, you see some very interesting historical displays of information on the monarchy of Hawai'i. This museum is totally worth your time and if you really want to see the real Hawai'i beyond it's beauty, beaches and volcanos, you owe it to yourself to learn all about how it came to be understood as Hawai'i. I highly recommend a leisurely walk thru this museum.

A nature and folk museum that is a bit outdated, but it fits into the environment and every voluntary donation benefits it (even the entrance fee). Very informative, it takes hours to internalize everything, but as a Hawaii connoisseur, a lot is already known.
