I contacted several companies looking for an all day private tour for four that would not just be sitting in a vehicle all the time -- we wanted to do some walking. Unlike Canyon de Chelly, where an all day tour is all day, an all day tour in Monument Valley is 6 hours. The tours seem to be fairly inflexible -- I got the best response from Blackwater. We started with a morning Mystery Valley tour, had a break at The View, then we were picked up at 5:00 for a Sunset Tour of Monument Valley. Our guide Frank arrived early. Frank warned us to go get coats which we all appreciated as it was chilly in the open truck. Mystery Valley was stunning. Frank was personable and interesting. Although it is "high" season, we only saw one other group at one stop, so we felt like we had Mystery Valley to ourselves. In Monument Valley, we went off the public road for part of the tour, including a stop at a hogan to learn about rug weaving that we all enjoyed. Frank played the flute at one formation "Big Hogan" and it was lovely to listen to. It would be more interesting to me to spend more time in the part of Monument Valley where a guide is required. The wind picked up in the afternoon and was really howling by the time our sunset tour was over, so we saw the sand dunes in motion but no sunset. We were impressed with Frank's driving.

By going on a tour of Monument Valley we experienced so much more than we possibly could by self driving. Firstly, we were able to travel off the main roads as well as hearing stories that you wouldn’t get if you drove yourself. The sunrise tour seemed the best option for us – and it didn’t disappoint! The views were amazing, and being the only two on the tour with someone who grew up in the Valley, we learnt a great deal. Willie taught us about his childhood, the Navajo people and the different structures and formations in Monument Valley. The tour lasted 3 h, which was probably an ideal amount of time. We’d highly recommend a sunrise tour! Although it was well worth the money, be sure to take the correct cash!

My husband and 11 year old son did the half day tour. Our tour guide was Parick, a soft spoken and excellent tour guide. We loved riding in the outdoors in the back of his truck. Our son rode indoors with him and we could see them chatting. Patrick is young enough to get along with a child and also give a great tour which interested us all. Monument Valley is an incredible place, and I highly recommend going with a guide, as you can go off the main road, and a guide knows which spots are the most special. Patrick sang for us near the end of the tour with the accompaniment of his drum. With his eyes closed and the emotion in his voice, one could really feel the history, both noble and tragic, of the Navajo people.
