Although the people were friendly the experience is lacking. The plantation was a reconstruction from 1936 and that they only let you see like 4 rooms on the first floor was very disappointing. The wagon tour was interesting as were the slave quarters and the tree lined entrance is absolutely gorgeous. But for a really good antebellum experience you may wish to try another place.

The site is pretty, but not what we expected. The “plantation“ house is a 1936 construction on the site of an earlier home. It is a working farm, primarily U-pick fruits and vegetables. There are several parts of the plantation you get with your admission; the two best in my estimation are the slave cottages and the Gullah presentation. Take your time in the cottages-there is lots of good, interesting information. The Gullah presentation is musical storytelling and quite well done. The tractor tour around the farm was interesting. The least interesting aspect was the house tour—it is mostly talking while standing as you really only see four rooms of the house. They are nicely decorated, but no pictures allowed (why...?). The guide was not animated and it made for a very dry 40 minutes. The Avenue of the Oaks entry is gorgeous. Is this worth the $21 senior entry—I don’t think so.

For our tour we had Wayne! There are not enough words to describe how wonderful he was during the trip. He was so knowledgeable about the history of Charleston but more importantly was genuinely enthusiastic. He was so kind, very engaging in conversation, and showed a genuine interest in everyone! He is definitely a 10/10 and anyone who gets him for a tour will be very pleased!!!
