We live in KY & have toured most of the bourbon distilleries, but found the KY River Tour on the web while searching for something to do on a hot summer afternoon. After a quick call, we were signed up for the 2 pm* Bourbon History Tour. We arrived at the very busy Buffalo Trace Distillery Visitor's Center at 1:45, giving us time for a quick restroom break** before meeting Allison for the short drive to the boat ramp. Captain Nathan provided a quick safety review of the small pontoon, then offered us a choice of Highbridge Spring Water or Ale-8-1. He provided an informative commentary as we cruised, not only pointing out locations related to Bourbon's rich history, but also the history of the KY River, & Frankfort as well. In the summer the river's hills are covered with lush, green trees hiding most structures. (We will return in the fall when the leaves turn!). We are fairly knowledgeable of KY history, but still learned much from Nathan! Even on a very hot afternoon, the boat provided a nice breeze and some cover from the sun. We saw turtles & possibly an eagle, but otherwise the wildlife were in hiding. Both the Captain and Allison offered suggestions for other distilleries & restaurants in the area. I think this tour would be best for older children & all adults. Good shoes needed to get to the boat ramp and climb into the boat. Highly recommend a Buffalo Trace tour & tasting too! *The website would allow us to sign up for a 3 pm tour, but Allison told us it was cancelled. Call ahead! **There is no restroom on the boat. The visitor's center was crowded with a wait in the women's restroom.

Allison and Nathan are both wonderful. Both are full of interesting information on local history and good story tellers. This was a fantastic experience. My only recommendation is to book early as they seem to sell out quickly. It was a good experience. The river was beautiful.

We booked the bourbon boat for as something to do on the bourbon trail after most distilleries tours ended. Weather looked questionable for our tour time and they proactively called to move us up and arrange with buffalo trace to get us on their last tour so we could do both. Colonel Nathan was a great and informative guide who provided a lot of additional history that was different than what we learned on the tours. His passion for history and the river is evident. We enjoyed the complimentary local ALe8 and a bourbon ball. I highly recommend this for anyone on the bourbon trail or anyone interested is a relaxing river boat tour with some history thrown in ;both bourbon history and others.
