Canyonlands Mountain Bike Tour on the White Rim Trail

Overview
A must in any biker’s rites of passage is riding the White Rim Trail mountain bike tour in Canyonlands National Park. Riding on a sandstone bench through a land called “Island in the Sky” you will pass Mussleman Arch, Monument Basin, Turks head, Candlestick Tower, and White Crack, a perch 1000 feet above the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers in the center of Canyonlands… some believe the center of the universe. If you only had time for one Moab area bike trip in your life, the White Rim Trail mountain biking tour in Canyonlands should be the one. The White Rim Trail trail mountain bike trip can also be combined with the Colorado River through Cataract Canyon for the ultimate multi-sport adventure vacation.

Important to note: camping gear is not included, but is available to rent for between $40 - $65.

The riding, back country camping, and scenery were all surreal. The riding pace was demanding - don't show up to this out of shape. Lasting impressions will be the epic descents upon arrival and down Murphy's on day two, as well as knowledgeable, accommodating trail guides who go out of their way to make it a great experience. The Holiday River packing list is fined tuned - follow it to the letter. Other riders are entitled to their opinions, but in response to a negative reviewer in my group: - The food prepared by our guides was REALLY good. Fresh veggies, omelets, pork tenderloin !! And they were perfect portion sizes in my opinion. You don't want to stuff yourself out there. - There were short diversions for hiking, which held amazing views. But with the emphasis on biking, it was good to keep moving and have more time for camp setup. I did not feel let down because of a lack of hiking. - Two guides felt like plenty for a dozen riders. They showed us the park and served as bike mechanics, chefs, and dishwashers. I'm not sure how additional guides could have added to the experience. Overall, everything seemed professional and dialed in. I had an awesome time and hope to return with my kids when they're a little older. But I'll have some great memories and photos to hold me over til then!

Just returned from a three day White Rim Trail bike tour with Holiday River Expeditions. I took the same trip some five or six years ago with Holiday and thought they did a great job. This time, not so much. Some of the issues I encountered: • After I booked my trip I was asked to switch dates (by one day) because the dates I picked were undersubscribed. No big deal. What I wasn’t told was that the new date was part of a combo “Bike/Raft” trip. So on day 3 half the group had to sit around mid-day for for almost 2 hours with no shade waiting for the boats to show up so the folks going on the raft trip could switch over. Not only was this uncomfortable but it put us behind climbing out of Mineral Bottom (so conditions were hotter) and delayed the return to Green River, making return travel more difficult. These trips really should not be mixed. • There wasn’t enough food. Really! I understand no one wants to waste food but if people are burning 3000+ calories riding you need to feed them. Dinner portions were not generous and there were basically no seconds. At least a couple of us ended up eating snacks after dinner to not be hungry. Lunch was OK only because there was always PBJ. At almost $300/day this is inexcusable. • Twelve guests with two guides is too many. There will always be variations in riding ability and speed, but the bigger the group the greater the disparity. It also means the riding guide can’t really keep tabs with the group (although at least one of our guides didn’t make much of an effort anyway). Then when we get to camp (often late because of stragglers) the guides are crazy busy trying to get things set up for dinner, then cleanup, then bed. So there isn’t much guide-guest socializing. Also, despite being advertised, there were no exploratory hikes other than stops on the ride (Whitecrack, Black Crack) because we were so late and the guides were so busy. • There was only one person at orientation to fit 10 people to rental bikes. So the 30 minute orientation was more like 90 minutes, most of which was spent standing around (and getting bit by mosquitos). Would it be that hard to either have both guides or a shop helper to assist? • The trip starts at 7am on day one at the shop in Green River. No breakfast is provided.. There aren’t a lot of places to eat in Green River, let alone ones that are open at 6:30am. Coffee and some fruit isn’t adequate. So you basically start your ride on an empty stomach until lunch. Holiday is (or at least was) a family-owned business and one of the original Southern Utah adventure tour operators. It’s sad to see how they’ve deteriorated. White Rim is an epic adventure but I’d find another tour company to do it with.

We are sure sorry to hear you had such a hard experience on your recent expedition with us. We want to assure you the issues you brought up have been taken seriously & we will be going over our policies and practices to see where we went wrong & how we can tweak and improve our methods for future guests' experiences. The food pack in particular is hard to hear as we really do strive to provide excellent meal service in the backcountry. We will look into ways to manage guests expectations moving forward in terms of discrepancy in guest ability levels and communicating about any logistics changes pertaining to a combination bike/raft expedition. Please know we are sorry to see this review & will do everything in our power to continue to provide exceptional trips moving forward.

The guides (Jack and Julian) were awesome! The trip is remote with no services other than the guides and the van. Jack and Julian made it very comfortable for us. The camp was comfortable, the food was great and the cold beer was the best! EPIC!
